YouTube advertisers can now route viewers directly into brand conversations via messaging apps without leaving the platform. Google confirmed the changes as part of its August Demand Gen Drop, which builds on hundreds of improvements the company says it made to the Demand Gen campaign type during the second half of 2025.
In-Stream Messaging Connects YouTube Ads to Direct Conversations
Google is testing an option that lets customers start a conversation with a brand via a messaging app directly from Demand Gen ads on YouTube, with a DM link embedded in-stream. The feature represents a new call-to-action category for the campaign type. For lead generation advertisers, the test introduces another potential action beyond sending users to a website or landing page.
The distinction from existing conversion paths is functional, not cosmetic. A viewer responding to a YouTube ad through the messaging feature does not exit to an external landing page; the interaction initiates within the ad experience itself. Google's stated focus is on moving customers who already demonstrate strong intent closer to a purchase by making it easier to contact the advertiser from the ad experience.
Travel Advertisers Get Personalized Inventory and Real-Time Offers
The August announcement also expands Demand Gen capabilities for travel advertisers by surfacing local activities, events, and real-time offers, and by personalizing hotel ads to serve relevant properties to the correct audiences.
Earlier this year, Google introduced Travel Feeds in Demand Gen, allowing advertisers to connect a Hotel Center feed to build dynamic video ads featuring hotel pricing, ratings, and availability. The August update extends that foundation by adding contextual activity recommendations and real-time offer surfacing, making Demand Gen more applicable across the full travel consideration journey, from destination research through to specific property or experience booking.
AI Video Creation Moves to General Availability
Google also expanded video creation capabilities by making Multimodal Video Creation in Asset Studio generally available to all advertisers, enabling them to go from storyboarding to creating horizontal and vertical assets in one workflow.
Google added its Omni AI creation tools to Asset Studio as part of this update. Asset Studio is available to all advertisers signed up to Google Ads. Previously available in limited access, the general availability release removes the rollout gate that had restricted the multimodal workflow to select accounts.
Demand Gen Drops are monthly product update showcases that Google introduced in September 2025, with each drop announcing new features and capabilities for Demand Gen campaigns.
Performance Context Behind the August Updates
Google cited internal data alongside the August announcements. According to Google, YouTube is consistently delivering results for marketers through Demand Gen, which has seen a 26% increase in conversions per dollar driven by more than 60 AI-powered improvements to ramp time, bidding, and related systems. The company's August announcement separately claimed that the hundreds of improvements introduced in the second half of 2025 are, on average, driving a 30% increase in conversions or conversion value for advertisers, a figure TechWyse was unable to independently verify from a named primary data source at publication time.
The August updates arrive as Google is also migrating standalone Display campaigns into Demand Gen, a transition that began in June 2026 with a migration tool inside Google Ads. The move continues Google's push toward combining inventory sources and campaign controls inside fewer campaign types.
What This Means for Advertisers in Practice
For lead generation campaigns running on YouTube, the in-stream messaging test, if it graduates to full availability, would require advertisers to evaluate which messaging platforms they support and whether their teams are equipped to handle real-time conversation volume generated by video ad exposure. The feature is currently in testing, and Google has not confirmed a general availability timeline.
For travel advertisers, the addition of local activities and real-time offers to Demand Gen inventory means campaign creative and feed management will need to account for more dynamic content formats alongside existing hotel and property listings.
For video production, the general availability of Multimodal Video Creation in Asset Studio reduces the barrier to producing both horizontal and vertical ad formats from a single workflow, a practical consideration given that Demand Gen campaigns run across YouTube and Google's most visual surfaces, including Discover, Gmail, and Google Maps, with channel controls available to adjust for performance needs.
Google's August Demand Gen Drop announcement was published on the Accelerate with Google platform on August 27, 2026.
