Meta Launches Business Agent Globally, Bringing AI Sales and Customer Service Automation to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger

Businesses of any size can now deploy an AI agent across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger to handle customer conversations, qualify leads, and close sales without human intervention. Meta announced the global availability of its Meta Business Agent on June 3, 2026, at the company's Conversations conference in London, ending nearly two years of limited testing in select markets.

Global Rollout Follows Regional Testing

The launch follows nearly two years of testing AI agents in WhatsApp Business for customer support in countries like India and Mexico. Meta says more than one million businesses are already using a Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger to respond to customers around the clock, with more than one billion active conversations between businesses and customers taking place every day across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

The global rollout marks a shift from limited availability to open access; any business can now configure an agent and have it respond to customers within minutes. The agent can also communicate with customers in their local languages while adapting to a business's preferred tone and communication style.

What the Agent Can Do

Meta Business Agent is an AI-powered customer conversation tool that handles inbound queries, makes product recommendations, books appointments, qualifies leads, and closes sales, operating 24 hours a day in the customer's local language. A handoff mechanism lets the agent escalate to a live employee once conversations reach a point the owner defines.

Meta's head of product, Naomi Gleit, told Reuters that the tool is designed to go well beyond legacy chatbot automation. "This is definitely an enterprise play," Gleit said. "We actually want to take action now. We actually want it to be able to complete the payment, to process the booking, to place the order," which goes beyond rule-based automations for legacy bots.

A New Tool for Business Operators

Beyond customer-facing functions, Meta is also testing a companion feature for business owners themselves. According to Meta, the agent delivers a morning briefing that summarises overnight customer conversations, providing context on threads the business owner or team missed, and surfaces insights from those conversations. Meta stated it is starting with a select number of businesses on the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite, with a waitlist open for those wanting access.

Future capabilities described at the London event include market research, product insight identification, calendar management, and competitive intelligence. These are described as planned expansions, not features available at launch.

Enterprise Infrastructure: The Business Agent Platform

Alongside the consumer-facing tool, Meta launched the Meta Business Agent Platform, an enterprise-grade infrastructure layer that connects to third-party systems, including Shopify and Zendesk and allows large organizations to build, customize, and deploy agents at scale. According to the company, the platform includes enterprise-grade controls, guardrails, and measurement capabilities that allow organizations to define rules and deliver personalized customer experiences.

Large businesses will pay for the agent based on how many tokens they use. Smaller merchants will see the agent bundled into tiers of WhatsApp Business Premium. The specific pricing tiers and feature allocations between free and paid access were not detailed in the June 3 announcement.

Business Discovery on WhatsApp

Meta also announced changes to how customers will find businesses inside WhatsApp. Users will soon be able to search for businesses directly through the app or share business contact cards in chats. Meta stated in its June 3 announcement that this functionality is not yet live and is part of a forthcoming update.

Access and Pricing Timeline

Businesses can activate Meta Business Agent for free initially. Meta says paid subscription offerings will become available in the coming months, with options for businesses of different sizes. The specific pricing structure, tier definitions, and feature allocation between free and paid access were not detailed in the June 3 announcement.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, speaking at the Conversations event in London, framed the launch as a step toward a broader ambition, saying:

"As our models advance, your agent will take on more and eventually help you run your whole business."

What This Means for Marketers

For businesses already using WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, or Messenger as customer touchpoints, Meta Business Agent introduces a native automation layer that does not require third-party chatbot software or custom development. Businesses managing inbound lead volume, appointment scheduling, or product catalogue inquiries through Meta's messaging platforms now have the option to automate those flows directly within the platforms where their customers already initiate contact. Larger operations with existing CRM or commerce infrastructure, including Shopify or Zendesk users, will be able to evaluate the enterprise platform tier once its pricing and integration depth are disclosed.

Meta confirmed in its June 3, 2026 announcement that the Business Agent is available now at no cost, with paid tiers to follow within the coming months, and that the enterprise platform is open to businesses already using WhatsApp's existing Business Platform alongside Messenger and Instagram.
