Google Publishes First Standalone Help Page for YouTube Audio Ads, Centralizing Format Specs and Setup

Google has given YouTube audio advertisers a single official reference point for the first time. Google's Google Ads Help Center now hosts a dedicated page for creating YouTube audio ads, consolidating creative specifications, campaign setup instructions, and production best practices that had previously been scattered across broader platform documentation.

A Format That Predates Its Own Documentation

Google rolled out YouTube audio ads to all advertisers in October 2022, making the publication of a dedicated help page a notable gap that has now been addressed. The new page confirms that YouTube audio ads allow advertisers to tap into audiences who are listening to music, podcasts, or other audio content on YouTube. The format targets users in what Google describes as "listening-first" states, moments when YouTube is running in the background or on audio-only surfaces, including YouTube Music.

Google introduced audio ads as its first ad format designed to connect brands with audiences in engaged and ambient listening on YouTube. Despite the format's multi-year availability, advertisers looking to implement it previously had no single authoritative reference in the Google Ads Help Center.

Creative Specifications and Ad Length Rules

The newly published documentation sets out the technical requirements for the format in full. To run YouTube audio ads, advertisers must first upload a video file to YouTube. The recommended creative approach is a static image or simple animation paired with a voiceover, a visual component that displays while the audio plays.

YouTube audio ads can be up to 30 seconds long. Ads up to 15 seconds are served as non-skippable ads, while ads between 16 and 30 seconds are served as skippable ads. The maximum accepted file size is 128GB, and the format supports resolutions from 240p up to 2160p (4K), with a required 16:9 aspect ratio. If a 4:3 asset is submitted, black bars are added to the sides automatically.

For voiceover pacing, the documentation recommends 60 to 80 words for a 30-second ad. Advertisers are also directed to introduce the brand or product early, maintain a conversational tone, and include a call-to-action in either the audio track or the visual component.

Campaign Setup and Bidding

YouTube audio ads use Target CPM (cost-per-thousand impressions) bidding, meaning advertisers set how much they are willing to pay every thousand times the ad is played. Campaigns are built under the Brand Awareness and Reach objective, using the Video campaign type with Audio selected as the campaign subtype.

The help page also confirms that the format supports advanced audience targeting and integrates with the latest version of Brand Lift measurement, with reporting available directly in Google Ads. YouTube audio ads enable advertisers to extend their reach to new audio inventory, running during long listening sessions and backgrounded moments.

Inventory Reach Across YouTube and YouTube Music

Google made audio ads globally available for YouTube Music and podcast listeners, purchasable through Google Ads or Display & Video 360. The new help page reinforces this reach, confirming the format is served across both YouTube and YouTube Music when users exhibit listening-first signals.

Google has cited data from Edison Research showing YouTube is among the most popular destinations for listening to podcasts. That audience context frames how the format is intended to function: reaching users who are engaging with the platform aurally rather than visually, whether through music, podcasts, or long-form background listening.

Implications for Advertisers

For digital marketers managing YouTube campaigns, the documentation formalizes setup steps that were previously reliant on fragmented resources. Campaigns structured under the Brand Awareness and Reach objective with Target CPM bidding and the Audio subtype selected should now be straightforward to configure using the official guidance. Advertisers already running video campaigns on YouTube can apply the same targeting parameters and measurement tools to audio placements without building a separate workflow; the format shares audience targeting options and Brand Lift measurement capabilities with existing video campaign infrastructure.
