Google Adds Channel Diagnostics to Performance Max, Surfacing Missing and Disapproved Assets by Channel

Performance Max advertisers now have a direct view into which specific assets are blocking their campaigns from serving on individual Google channels. A Google Ads Specialist shared the update on LinkedIn, flagging the appearance of a dedicated Channel Diagnostics section inside Performance Max campaign reporting, the latest expansion of a transparency initiative Google has been building out across 2025 and into 2026.

What Channel Diagnostics Shows Advertisers

The status column within the channel performance report provides diagnostics that surface potential issues on specific channels, so advertisers know where to prioritize their efforts. The new Channel Diagnostics section extends this further, allowing advertisers to identify missing or disapproved assets, such as headlines, descriptions, or images, that may be preventing a campaign from becoming eligible to serve on a given channel.

Advertisers can access the feature by selecting the Insights and Reports dropdown in the section menu, then selecting Channel Performance. From there, selecting "View channel diagnostics" opens detailed statuses and guidance.

The diagnostics surface potential issues on specific channels, so advertisers know where to prioritize their efforts, for example, identifying that a campaign is not serving on Maps due to missing store locations, or that it is limited on Search because landing pages are not sufficiently relevant to user queries.

A Running Expansion of PMax Transparency

Channel Diagnostics is not a standalone launch. It is part of a series of reporting improvements Google has introduced in response to sustained criticism about Performance Max's limited visibility.

Google introduced new channel-level reporting in Performance Max in April 2025, describing it as "a top-requested feature." Channel performance reporting began appearing in advertiser accounts on May 30, 2025, one month after Google's initial announcement.

In a March 19, 2026 blog post, Google confirmed it had continued expanding channel performance reporting, adding bulk reporting and account-level downloads, segmentation by conversion action and ad event type, and additional diagnostics including limited serving due to restrictive bid targets.

The channel performance report now includes key format-level breakdowns, in-depth metrics, and diagnostics that surface potential issues on different channels, along with ROI columns, a cost toggle, bulk reporting and downloads, and segmentation.

The "Black Box" Problem This Addresses

For years, advertisers had no way to determine whether their budgets were being spent on high-quality search traffic or low-converting display placements, a lack of channel visibility that created an impossible optimization scenario where advertisers could not determine which elements of their campaigns were succeeding or failing.

By January 2025, over one million advertisers were using Performance Max, but criticism about transparency had reached a high point. Industry publications regularly featured coverage of Performance Max's "black box" problem, and major agencies began publicly questioning whether the campaign type was worth the lack of control.

Channel exclusions are still not available in Performance Max, though Google has confirmed it is exploring future control options. The Channel Performance report is designed for visibility and optimization, rather than manual channel control.

What This Means in Practice

For agencies and in-house teams managing Performance Max campaigns, the Channel Diagnostics section reduces the manual effort required to identify why a campaign may not be serving on a given channel. Rather than auditing asset groups individually, advertisers can now review flagged asset types, missing images, disapproved headlines, and incomplete descriptions at the channel level and resolve them from a single view. Google's own documentation notes that if a campaign is not showing ads on a particular channel and no issues are present, this likely indicates Performance Max is simply bidding on channels that provide a higher return on investment at that moment, a distinction that makes accurate diagnostics more important, not less, when troubleshooting genuine delivery gaps.

Google has stated it will continue to add more improvements to channel performance reporting.
