Google Analytics Launches Campaign Data Import Validation Report to Flag Missing Metrics

Google Analytics Adds Campaign Data Import Validation Report

Google Analytics users who import campaign data from non-Google advertising platforms now have a dedicated tool to check that data for completeness before it enters their reports. Google confirmed in its official Analytics product documentation that it has launched a Campaign Data Import Validation Report, giving advertisers a way to audit both new and previously imported campaign data for gaps in key performance fields.

What the Validation Report Does

The new report reviews both non-Google campaign data and previously imported campaign data, identifying campaigns that may be missing key performance metrics, specifically, imports that lack cost, clicks, and impression data. Google stated in its launch documentation that the tool is designed to help advertisers "pinpoint campaigns that lack useful campaign performance data" and to enable review of historical imports, not just new ones.

The report functions as a pre-analysis quality check. Google Analytics combines imported campaign data from outside Google, including email and social media advertising, with revenue and key events data already collected in the platform. When imported records are missing performance fields, that combined reporting is skewed without any visible error to the advertiser. The validation report surfaces those gaps directly.

The Broader Campaign Data Import Feature

The validation report is part of Google's Campaign Data Import feature, which was renamed from "Cost Data Import" in November 2025. Google announced the name change on November 19, 2025; the update affected terminology only, with all existing functionality remaining unchanged and no action required from current users. The feature allows marketers to import campaign-level attributes and metrics from advertising platforms outside Google's ecosystem.

Imported campaign data is accessible in Google Analytics under Reports > Acquisition > Non-Google campaign and in the Advertising workspace under Planning > All channels, where the platform reports aggregated cost, impressions, and clicks across imported dimensions.

Google has expanded the feature's data source support significantly over the past year. The platform added nine new data sources in June 2025, including Google Sheets, Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, BigQuery, Google Cloud Storage, HTTPS, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake. Reddit Ads received native cost tracking on July 21, 2025, followed by Snap Ads integration on September 17, 2025, and Pinterest integration on September 26, 2025.

Who Is Affected

The validation report is relevant to any Google Analytics property that imports campaign data from non-Google platforms, including multi-channel advertisers running paid campaigns on Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, Snap, Pinterest, Microsoft Advertising, and other networks. Google simplified campaign data import requirements on February 3, 2025, reducing required fields from five to three core parameters: source, medium, and date. That change lowered the barrier to import but also increased the likelihood that records would arrive without the optional, but analytically critical, fields like cost, clicks, and impressions.

Missing or incomplete data can lead to inaccurate reporting, making it harder to compare channels or evaluate marketing performance. For advertisers relying on Google Analytics to calculate cross-channel return on ad spend or non-Google cost-per-click, undetected gaps in imported data directly compromise those calculations.

Practical Implications for Marketers

For advertisers importing offline or third-party campaign data into Google Analytics, including teams using CRM-to-Analytics pipelines to track post-click performance, the validation report provides a structured way to catch silent import failures before they affect budget decisions or bid strategy inputs. Campaigns with missing cost fields would understate total channel spend in blended reports, while missing click and impression data would skew efficiency metrics such as cost-per-click and click-through rates across non-Google channels. Advertisers running regular data imports should review the validation report after each upload cycle to confirm all performance fields are populated correctly.

Google stated in its launch documentation that the campaign data import validation report "assists you in assessing your non-Google campaign data and imported campaign data," and that it enables review of previously imported data, not only imports going forward.
