Google Gemini users can now generate and download finished documents without leaving the app. Google announced on April 29, 2026, that Gemini can create PDFs, Microsoft Word and Excel files, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more directly within a conversation.
What the Update Changes
Until now, users had to copy, paste, and reformat everything manually into the format they needed. The update removes that step entirely. To use the feature, users tell Gemini what they want, for example, "create a budget", and then tap the export button to download the output in their desired format.
Once a file is ready, users can download it directly to their device or export it to Google Drive for further collaboration.
Supported File Formats
According to Google, supported formats include Docs, Sheets, Slides, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .csv, LaTeX, TXT, RTF, and Markdown.
LaTeX is a typesetting system for formatting scientific documents and journals. Nearly the entire scientific community relies on LaTeX, and Google's decision to support it is notable given that OpenAI recently released Prism, an entire app dedicated to formatting LaTeX journals.
One format is currently absent from the list. There is no direct Microsoft PowerPoint export at this time, although users can export to Google Slides and then download that file as a .ppt.
Rollout and Availability
Google confirmed that the file generation feature is now available to users globally. The feature began rolling out to all Gemini users on April 29. Users who do not see it immediately should expect it as part of a gradual rollout.
Early adoption has not been entirely seamless. While the rollout is global, early reports mention occasional crashes or the feature not appearing immediately for some mobile users.
Practical Implications for Marketers and Content Teams
For digital marketing teams, the ability to generate client-ready deliverables, including budget proposals in .xlsx, briefs in .docx, or campaign summaries in PDF, directly from a Gemini prompt reduces the time spent reformatting AI-generated output in third-party applications. The addition of Google Sheets and Slides support also means Gemini-generated content can move into collaborative Workspace environments without an intermediate copy-paste step. Teams working across both Google and Microsoft Office ecosystems benefit from the dual-format support, though the absence of a native PowerPoint export is a gap worth monitoring.
Additional Platform Updates
Alongside the file generation feature, the Gemini app's personalization features, including Memories, which allows Gemini to remember key details and preferences users have shared, and the ability to import chats from other AI apps, are coming to the UK. Both features are expected to be fully rolled out within the next couple of weeks.
