Anthropic Launches Claude Design in Research Preview With Opus 4.7

Paid Claude subscribers can now generate interactive prototypes, slide decks, wireframes, and marketing collateral directly inside Claude. Anthropic confirmed in its April 17 product announcement on anthropic.com that Claude Design is available in research preview for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plan holders, with access rolling out gradually.

What Claude Design Does

Claude Design allows users to create polished visual work, designs, interactive prototypes, slide decks, one-pagers, and marketing collateral through conversational prompts and fine-grained editing controls. The tool is powered by Claude Opus 4.7, Anthropic's most capable generally available vision model, which the company also released on April 17.

Users refine outputs through conversation, inline comments, direct edits, or custom sliders. When given access, Claude can also apply a team's design system to every project automatically, keeping output consistent with existing company designs.

Users can select a component of a visual asset and ask Claude Design to change it through a feature called Tweaks. The feature can also generate custom graphic design controls, for example, a tooltip that lets users manually adjust the size and font of ad text.

Brand System Integration and Import Options

During onboarding, Claude builds a design system for a team by reading its codebase and design files. Every subsequent project uses those colours, typography, and components automatically. Teams can refine the system over time and maintain more than one.

Users can start from a text prompt, upload images and documents in DOCX, PPTX, or XLSX format, or point Claude at a codebase. A web capture tool is also available to grab elements directly from a website so prototypes reflect the actual product.

Collaboration and Export

Designs carry organization-scoped sharing controls. Users can keep a document private, share it via link for view-only access within an organization, or grant edit access so colleagues can modify the design and work with Claude together.

When a design is ready to build, Claude packages everything into a handoff bundle that can be passed to Claude Code with a single instruction, creating a closed loop from exploration to prototype to production code. Export options also include internal URLs, folder saves, Canva, PDF, PPTX, and standalone HTML files.

Usage Tracking and Enterprise Controls

Claude Design usage is metered and tracked separately from other Claude services, with its own usage allowances and weekly limits that sit alongside, not inside, existing chat or Claude Code limits.

Enterprise users with usage-based pricing receive a one-time credit covering approximately 20 typical prompts. The credit is consumed before additional Claude Design usage counts toward organizational spend and expires on July 17.

For Enterprise organizations, Claude Design is off by default. Admins can enable it through Organization settings.

Uploaded assets are stored persistently and fall under the same data retention and deletion policies as other Anthropic enterprise products. Claude Design does not currently support data residency requirements.

Industry Response

Figma stock fell as much as 6.8% after Anthropic unveiled Claude Design. Anthropic's chief product officer, Mike Krieger, had resigned from the board of Figma on April 14, the same day The Information reported that Anthropic's next model would include design tools that could compete with Figma's primary offering.

The launch also coincides with a partnership between Anthropic and Canva. Claude Design is powered by Claude Opus 4.7 and uses Canva's Design Engine and Visual Suite, letting users go from a text description to a fully editable, on-brand visual without opening Canva directly. The announcement was timed to coincide with Canva's launch of Canva AI 2.0 at its Create event in Los Angeles.

Early Enterprise Results

Education technology company Brilliant cited Claude Design's ability to turn static designs into interactive prototypes as a significant workflow improvement. The company's most complex pages, which required more than 20 prompts to recreate in other tools, needed only two prompts in Claude Design.

Datadog's product team reported a comparable outcome, compressing what had been a week-long cycle of briefs, mockups, and review rounds into a single conversation.

Practical Implications for Marketing and Product Teams

For digital marketers and product teams, Claude Design reduces the tool-switching typically involved in moving from concept to shareable visual. The direct handoff path to Claude Code means design intent can be passed to development without a separate briefing process. Enterprise administrators should note the product's current limitations: collaboration is not yet fully multiplayer, the editing experience has rough edges, and Anthropic has not provided a general availability date, stating it will let user feedback determine when Claude Design is ready for full release.

Anthropic stated in its April 17 announcement that over the coming weeks, it will work to make it easier to build integrations with Claude Design, enabling connections to additional tools teams already use.
