Apple Selects Google Gemini to Power Siri and Apple Intelligence

Apple has chosen Google’s Gemini as the underlying AI technology for Siri and other upcoming artificial intelligence features, formalizing a multi-year partnership between the two tech giants.

The decision signals a notable shift in Apple’s AI strategy as it prepares to roll out a broader initiative known as Apple Intelligence, which is expected to significantly expand AI-driven capabilities across Apple devices.

Gemini Becomes the Foundation for Siri’s AI Upgrade

Under the new agreement, Google’s Gemini models will power key AI experiences, including a revamped version of Siri. Apple said the decision followed extensive internal evaluation of available AI technologies.

In a joint statement, the companies said Apple determined that Google’s AI provides the most capable foundation for Apple’s next generation of AI features, while allowing Apple to maintain its long-standing focus on privacy.

Apple emphasized that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device where possible and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure when needed, preserving what it describes as industry-leading privacy protections.

A Shift Away From OpenAI

The move represents a setback for OpenAI, which has been working with Apple to enhance Siri’s capabilities. While Apple has not detailed how existing partnerships may evolve, the Gemini deal positions Google as the primary AI engine behind Apple’s assistant and broader AI ecosystem.

The partnership comes ahead of an anticipated announcement detailing Apple’s expanded AI roadmap, which is expected to place greater emphasis on generative AI across iOS, macOS, and other platforms.

Timing and Rollout Expectations

Apple originally launched Siri in 2011, but recent reports suggest the long-promised overhaul of the assistant is scheduled to arrive early this year. Apple has not publicly confirmed a specific launch date and typically avoids commenting on unreleased products.

When released, the Gemini-powered upgrade is expected to deliver more advanced conversational abilities, improved contextual understanding, and deeper integration across Apple services.

Industry Reaction and Market Impact

The announcement drew criticism from some industry figures, including Elon Musk, who raised concerns about Google’s growing influence across AI, mobile platforms, and web infrastructure.

At the same time, analysts viewed the deal as a strong endorsement of Google’s recent progress in artificial intelligence. In a research note, Wedbush Securities described the partnership as a major validation moment for Google’s AI strategy.

Following the announcement, Google’s parent company Alphabet briefly reached a $4 trillion market valuation, joining Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia as the only companies to hit that milestone.

What This Means for the AI Landscape

Apple’s decision highlights a broader consolidation around a small number of leading AI model providers. For Google, the partnership extends Gemini’s reach into hundreds of millions of consumer devices. For Apple, it accelerates the delivery of advanced AI features without compromising its privacy-first positioning.

For marketers, developers, and digital strategists, the move reinforces the growing importance of Gemini as a foundational AI platform—one that now influences not only Google’s ecosystem, but Apple’s as well.

As Apple Intelligence rolls out, the partnership is likely to reshape expectations around voice assistants, on-device AI, and cross-platform AI integration.
