We SEO copywriters often see ourselves as a breed apart. And quite rightly so! We are not quite writers, not quite web designers but a mixture of the two. In terms of our knowledge, we are real generalists: we know something about everything. You can even get a degree in that, which is called Interdisciplinary Studies. Of course, only very few of us hold a degree in those studies, but we may as well. Unsurprisingly, because we know so much, there are some important life lessons you can learn from SEO Copywriters. I would like to take the time to share some of my own.
You may have heard the story of one of the US presidents walking into NASA and asking a cleaning operative what his job entailed. The man answered that he helped put a man on the moon. He recognised his own importance and the vital role he played in the huge cog that is NASA. And he is right. It is important to know who everybody is, what their name is and what they do. This sets you in good standing as a copywriter, because it shows you care about your clients, but it is also a lesson you can learn in life. Learn what the cleaning operative’s name is, because without them, you wouldn’t be able to live in the comfort you are accustomed to.
There is a beautiful story of an African American woman standing next to a broken down car in the rain. This was in the 1960s and it was not common for people, certainly not white Americans, to help and African American. One man, however, did. He picked the lady up and drove her home. Wanting to send him something as a thank you, she asked for his address. A few days later, he received a huge television, signed with thanks by Mrs Nat King Cole. Not everything in life is about making money. Sometimes, performing a selfless act will help you move on in life. Perhaps they will never be able to repay you, and that shouldn’t matter because it is a selfless act. But perhaps you do some copywriting work for free for a company that is need, and thereby help to save a lot of jobs. Or, if you’re really lucky, they will remember you later on in life and send lots of work your way. It pays to be nice, even if it is just in terms of karma.
As an SEO copywriter, you will come across many obstacles in your life. You may be presented with a subject you know nothing of. You may be asked to write about something you strongly oppose. You may struggle to get work in and wonder where you will get the money from to pay your mortgage. Always remember that obstacles are put on your path in order to help you achieve more. Don’t blame others for these obstacles, but find a solution within yourself. At the very least, you will learn something about yourself that you may not have known before, which in turn will help you to be better at what you do.
