Tools To Help You Do Killer Keyword Research

Keyword research is the most basic task in search engine optimization. It is the pillar which the whole on page optimization process rests. Hence, it is imperative that proper attention be paid while doing the keyword research component. Choosing and placing the right keywords can cumbersome and time consuming. With proper keyword placement the chances of your site getting noticed is much better.

There are cool SEO keyword tools that can help you find words or phrases such as Word Tracker and Google Adwords Keyword Tool. No doubt these tools help analyze the keywords you will need to consider as part of your SEO to make your online marketing as fruitful as it can be. But to add that extra dimension to your research and to sieve out keywords with that extra bite, you need to think beyond these common tools.

Here are my suggestions for an advanced keyword reasearch plan:

Keyword Comparative Research

Doing comparative numbers search will take you to the keyword search trends related to your business landscape.  For this I’d suggest Google Adwords Keyword Tool.  It provides the average search volume and previous month’s as well. No login required.

Bing Adcenter Research Keywords Tool: You need to login here first to use this service, it returns some solid data on actual search counts.  This type of exact data is not available through the Google tool.

Bing Adcenter

Google Insights For Search: With this, you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions/countries, categories, time frames and properties for a particular search term.

Tapping The Trends

If you know the precise time when your keywords are most frequently searched for then it can do a world of good. You would then be better prepared for the moves your competitors will be making. And if you find your current set of keywords to be less in demand you can easily switch over to a new set of terms or even make a shift in product focus. Google Trends and Bing AdCenter Labs: Keyword Forecast Tool are two good pick ups in this regard. The former will facilitate comparing multiple search terms and incoming trends, the latter forecasts the impression count and predicts demographic distributions of keywords along with keyword age distribution and keyword gender distribution stats.

Analyze the keyword trends in social media sites to explore how often keywords are appearing in content and conversations. This lets you know how people use and tag keywords, its popularity and related words. You can use some cool tools for fetching the data source related to your core search term.

Here are my choices to help determine keyword research in social media.

Twitter Twist

TweetVolume: Here you can enter words or phrases and see how often they appear on Twitter.

Twitter Search: Tool for searching what is happening on Twitter using a keyword.

Delicious Related Tweets: Again you will get Twitter relevancy of your keyword. Only recently Delicious changed from ‘Related Tags’ to ‘Related Tweets’.

Apart form these mentioned you can identify emerging search trends from blogs, forums, feeds and more. Another suggested tool on this front is Google News Archive Search.

Find The Toppers

To get a clear picture of the competition around you , take time to find out who is ranking high for your core keywords targeted, and what are there priority keywords. This can be done by doing a basic search. You can also use tools like Webceo which can analyze sites that have keywords in the meta content for a given keyword. Google Search-based Keyword Tool provides keyword ideas based on actual Google search queries. By checking competitors website URL you can view keywords related to it and its monthly search count.

Related Keyword Terms

Getting related queries is an added advantage to your keyword search. You can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool ‘related searches’ and ‘use synonyms’ for getting better keyword ideas. Make use of online dictionaries and glossaries that help with keyword research. To name, Synonym.com, Reference.com, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Meta Glossary are few among them.

So thats it! Just follow the guidelines above and have a rewarding bunch of keywords at your command that will help you stay above your competitors and hopefully generating revenue for your company!

Another good trick is to take your entire list of and break each individual word onto its own line. Then do a word count to see how many times each individual word shows up. (I paste the list into Excel, paste 1’s down the adjacent column, then consolidate both columns). Sort by count, and you’ll get a nice list of themes that you can logically build variations off of.
