Google Introduces Local Search Volume To Keyword Tool

Google's Keyword Tool now displays the “Local Search Volume” in a separate column

Local Search Volume IndexGoogle AdWords Keyword Tool has been a very popular online resource for doing keyword research. Professional webmasters have utilized the tool in the ongoing search for fresh keywords and to optimize their websites for existing keywords. Even ordinary users doing casual research have found the tool to be an easy and excellent aid.

Now the tool is going to become even more popular thanks to a new feature Google has added.  Google has rolled out a few changes to the AdWords Keyword Tool interface. The previous options 'Search Volume Trends' and 'Highest Volume Occurred In' have been replaced with two new columns, one for 'Local Search Volume' and other for 'Global Monthly Search Volume'.  Now that is handy!

Adwords Keyword Tool

The newly added Local Search Volume column provides data for previous month specific to your targeted country (local area) and language. By selecting 'Match Type' drop-down, you will get corresponding data. This allows webmasters to take advantage of any local trends and include local targeted keywords to their list. Global monthly search volume provides traffic in all countries and languages and returns results specific to your drop down selection from the 'Match Type' menu. It shows the approximate average monthly number of search queries matching each keyword results.

This new feature offers immense possibilities for national advertisers and webmasters to zero in on the target audience at the local level. Knowing the local search trends enables websites to be tailored for the particular geo-specific audience. PPC campaigns can be restructured through better analysis and on page optimization can also be enhanced using the new keyword suggestions.

Love this tool but what would make it even better is an 'advertiser competition' column for the local region only!

Local search volume means the number of searches the keyword is getting from your locality/region. And global search volume means the number of searches the keyword is getting globally/around the world.
If you're targeting a product in your locality, then refer to the local search volume.

How come local search be greater than global search sometimes?

I agree with you Hayden! They should bring back the annual search volume. No doubt this new additions will help advertisers focus on their niche markets, especially small business groups.

Nothing too special in my opinion, but every little bit helps. Google leads the way in internet advertising and I think it will be that way for a long time to come.Hope these changes will help to improve campaign success for all.

By this Google has done a fairly major change to its keyword tool. It would be even better if they have done the change without taking back the annual search volume column. Because the new facility is not showing the average search volume for the last 12 months in a local area, only the previous month’s data. This affects the long tail keywords as they do not have search volume every month. You cannot ignore those long terms for having traffic volume zero, especially in smaller local areas around the world.

This “local search” keyword tool should particularly benefit small scale enterprises confined to local markets. If they are able to do their SEO process right, they could hopefully expect to boost their business within a short time. Another useful tool from Google that should help every David face Goliath.
