5 Ways to Write Effective Keywords

5 Ways To Write Effective Keywords

Are you working hard to appear on the first page of search engine results and still not seeing the results you crave?

The reason for your problems could be very simple: you forgot to do proper keyword research!

If you intend to rank your website on the first page of Google or any other search engine, you need to find the right set of keywords that will help you with your SEO. With proper and well-planned keyword research, you can get a reasonable amount of website traffic, target the right sets of audiences, and make a good return on investment.

Let’s take a look at what this means in more detail.

What is keyword research?

Keywords are the words or phrases people type into search engines’ search bars. They are also called search queries or SEO keywords. Keyword research is when you analyze the words or phrases a person types in the search engine while looking for a particular product, service, or piece of content.

For example, suppose someone is searching online for a digital marketing school in Canada. They might use keywords like “best digital marketing school,” “top digital marketing college,” or even “digital marketing course“. A digital marketing school would find it useful to know what keywords are being used so that they can make sure they show up for them in search results.

Why is keyword research necessary?

Keyword research allows you to understand the following:

  • What your potential client is searching for on search engines
  • How much traffic you will get if you rank a particular keyword
  • The ranking difficulty of specific keywords
  • What content to include on your website to rank better

Understanding what your audience is searching for will help you plan out which keywords you should be using in your website content to target your audience and improve your lead generation (when will then, in turn, improve your return on investment).

How to Find Effective Keywords

1. Understand your industry and what your customer will be thinking while looking for your product or service

It is essential to have in-depth knowledge of the products and services that you offer. Next, you need to think like your customer: suppose you are looking for a particular product – what would you type in the search engine? Make a list of all the keywords you brainstormed, and make sure that these keywords are relevant and related to the product and service you offer on your website.

2. Look at what your competitors are doing

Source:

Analyzing your competitors’ websites is essential, especially since they will provide examples of relevant keywords. In particular, look at their content and their meta descriptions to get more ideas on the specific keyword(s) they are focusing on.

You can also search the prominent keywords that you have already shortlisted on a search engine and determine which websites/competitors rank when you search that keyword.

3. Focus on long-tail keywords

Long- tail keywords are more elaborate than average keywords, and it is easier for a new brand to rank using them. An example of a longtail keyword is “the best salon for women in Ontario.”

The benefit of considering long-tail keywords is that they have low competition and are therefore much easier to rank. If you try to rank with long-tail keywords, you are more likely to appear in search results, and you will attract customers who are more interested in the service or product you offer. Short tail keywords should be your last priority while planning your SEO.

4. Use the help of keyword research tools

A lot of tools are available that will help you analyze the keyword you want to focus on. For example, Google Keyword Planner, Semrush, and Moz Keyword Explorer can help you understand keywords’ search volume, ranking difficulty, cost per click details, keyword trends, and similar keywords. Keyword research tools will also help you narrow down the list you created in the first two steps.

5. Review your keywords

Source:

Once you have a good idea of the list of keywords you want to generate your content around you can use them in your blogs and on your website. Using research tools will show you a clear picture of how you are ranking and performing. You will need to keep reviewing the performance of your keywords, and you might even need to add more keywords and remove others. This is a continuous process and regular evaluation is needed for keyword effectiveness.

In Conclusion

Hurray! If you followed the steps above, you should have a perfect list of the keywords that your customers are searching for online. Content is significant for your SEO, and including these well-researched keywords while creating your content will ensure that you are able to rank on the first page of Google’s results.

I am actually using Adwords and used good keywords with high searches on my former blog and the result is that the indexes on google were removed. i tried to change my habit. now I am making my posts simple and readable by humans.

Almost 7 years later and this post is still spot on!
I hate it when I see websites or blogs that do not proper page names. mysite.com/internet-marketing-news.html is way better than mysite.com/112.html I generally avoid pages that look like the last one.
Also, I think that too many people don’t have realistic goals about what a certain set of keywords can do and how high they can rank in a certain interval. When they don’t rank, they just give up thinking that it’s impossible. Sometimes, just sticking with it for another month can bring keywords to the top.

It’s always a good idea to use keywords to get Google or any other web search site interested in your blog. After getting the recognition, you have to keep the user on the website so they can read and learn about your company. These 5 steps are perfect to accomplish this.
For my website, even though it is time consuming, I try to use the best keywords while at the same time ensuring I’m writing like a human for humans.

Choosing and matching keywords in my experience is time consuming but is definitely a must in writing a quality content. Then there’s the tip “don’t write for search engine,” adding much challenge in writing a post.
Sometimes I have to check my grammar as well since it seems that I’m making a fragment just to keep the keyword in the title within the first four words.
But this is a skill every blogger must learn. So as not to get bored, I write personal-full-of-rant post. Letting all out my opinions and emotions (with discretion and not all of it, definitely) and leaving behind the Keyword Tool.

I like the idea of thinking about keywords as bridges between the potential customers and the website being promoted. This being your advice seem to be applicable even in this post panda and post penguin environment. In fact, you gave the advice to write articles naturally and just make sure that the keyword desired are present in the text.
I think that to avoid over optimizing a content, writing naturally is a tip that seems to make sense. However, I wonder if there are some locations where the appearance of the keyword will always produce better ranking results.

Great post. I especially liked the 3rd point where you mentioned that we should write for people and not for search engines. Search engines like Google have become a lot smarter in the last few months and now they can detect whether you are high quality posts or just stuffing your content with keywords to please them. Choose highly targeted keywords, write for your audience and sprinkle your keywords within your content in a natural way and search engines are bound to love your site!
