Since the drop in February, Google and Bing have experienced an increase in their market share. Both Google and Bing’s search engine market share increased by 2.81% and 0.51%, respectively. Yahoo, on the other hand, experienced a small decrease of 0.10%. On April 21st, Google rolled out their mobile-friendly algorithm to favour mobile-friendly websites in search results. Bing recently announced that they will be ranking mobile-friendly websites higher in search results for smartphone and other mobile devices as well. However, Bing has confirmed that sites that aren’t mobile-friendly, yet still highly relevant for specific search queries will not be penalized. As people are continuously relying on mobile devices for daily tasks, Bing’s move to follow Google is important to capture mobile users in the market.
Earlier this year, Google and Twitter announced a deal on delivering live tweets in Google’s results. The feature became live during May and both companies announced that real-time content from Twitter can be found in search results when searching on the Google app or browser on a phone or tablet. Although the feature is only live for mobile users, it will provide Google users with much more of Twitter’s relevant content. In addition, it allows Twitter users to gain more reach through Google search engines. With user experience being an important factor, providing users with real-time results will definitely make Google more competitive in the search engine market.
Along with their mobile-friendly algorithm update, Google continues to provide better user experience with app indexing. Since many companies are releasing new apps for mobile users for better convenience and user experience, app indexing allows users to engage and install apps directly from Google search. Although this only applies to users that have the app already installed, Google will be able to show information directly within the installed app.
Following Google, Bing will be using information from index apps as a ranking factor in their search engine. Now, mobile searches are including apps as a result as well. It’s been forecasted that these search results will continue to grow. The inclusion of app indexing will provide better search experience and engagement for mobile users. The inclusion of app indexing will continue to make Bing more competitive in the search market.
