About Urchin

Urchin is a powerful and flexible web analytics solution that combines log file and cookie tracking technologies. Urchin was acquired by Google in 2005 and forms the basis of the Google Analytics product. Urchin offers a separate solution that benefits specific scenarios, including companies with data protection policies, or for tracking of internal/intranet content that is protected behind a firewall.

The Urchin software runs on its own server, rather than as a hosted solution as Google Analytics and Yahoo! Web Analytics do. Thus, there are capital and ongoing management costs associated with this (higher end) solution.

We recommend Urchin for the small, medium or large corporate application that wishes to own their own analytics data, or for tracking of in house content behind a firewall, which presents a problem to hosted solutions.
