Nice article, just to add a bit: If you want to see in Google Analytics, how often an email or newsletter was opened (or viewed), you can use http://email-tracking-with-google-analytics.com/, There you can get a pixel which you insert into your email. The pixel will then cause your Google Analytics to show how often the email has been read.

Sorry for the delay Jeffrey.

Yep that's it and make sure the GATC (Google Analytics Tracking Code) is installed on the appropriate pages.

Great post! Quick question for you... If all I want to do is track referrals from a vanity URL being 301 redirected, do I just create a tracking query string and redirect the vanity URL to that URL query string?

i.e. www.vanityurl.com ==> 301==> www.maindomain.com/?utm_source=www.vanityurl.com

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks for you help!

Yes Google Analytics to be sure is a magical analytical solution. As you mentioned it works equally well with both offline and online advertisement tracking. It's the technical perfection of Google analytics and its effectiveness in tracking Ad spends by calculating the ROI on all offline and online Ad campaigns that explains its increasing acceptance among the business community.

Google Analytics is a very invaluable tool to analyze about how visitors interact with a website. It provides a wide range of reports with a lot of flexibility and can track multiple websites under a single login. And the fact that it is free is perhaps the icing on the analytical cake. But one thing it does is arm Google with a lot of profitable information. Analytics not only shows how Google users search for a site and whether they convert into sales on it, but also reveals how all visitors, even from Yahoo and MSN reach a site and use it. Just the kind of information needed to keep Google ahead in the search engine supremacy race!

Nice information Robert and very detailed as well. I guess this really gives an overall idea of what Google Analytics can do to one's web site.

Nice post Robert! There actually lays a good deal of truth to the old adage that you have to spend money to make money. And advertising is such an option to all marketers; GA reports are too invaluable to track the number visitors to our site. I have tried other tracking options including proprietary tracking software for my ad campaigns, but now I am using Google tracking facility only!
