Thanks for the reply Jon. I also find a massive speed change in my webmaster tools reports every 2 months or so, which I can only attribute to the analytics code labouring to register. I wonder if you've had any like experiences. My site can go from being in the top 5% fastest to in the top 15% slowest over night, lasting for 5 days typically and then returning back to normal. We've run so many server tests and found no change to service speeds there.

Cheers

Thx for the comment Colin!

Discrepancies between log file and cookie tracking methods are par for the course. Your cart may be rewriting or serving the same url for different pages which would explain such a huge difference. It might also be due to:

- Visitors that have cookies disabled
- Search robots
- Pages that are not fully loading before the visitor clicks through
- Pages that have no code attached (e.g. enlarged product images, pdf's)

You seem well educated but for those that are looking at improving data quality, look for self referring visits and narrow down the untagged pages and more info on log/cookie/hybrid technologies are in Brian Clifton's book.

Thx,
I see vastly different numbers from Analytics, when compared to my user log files analysis. On some clients I'm seeing 75% more Google visits than is being shown on Google Analytics. Many of these sites are online stores with php pages and I wonder if this could be attributed to your first point, regarding distict URL's.
Thanks Chris, just beware with YWA using an include to try and group content pages.. you might have to use scripting to get page and category names! :)

Hi Rachel! Thanks for the question! We have a call tracking system that "pings" a URL when a call comes in. We allocate PPC, organic and Direct telephone numbers and include analytics source and medium information in each URL so that the profile records where the call comes from. Finally we setup goals for each of these pages to record a successful lead.

Hope that makes sense! Let me know if you need more info.
Great post Jon! I will definitely start taking php include into consideration for adding tracking code. That's a real time saver!
