The Rise In Popularity Of CPanel In Shared Hosting

The market for web hosting is exceptionally competitive. For people who are just starting out with making a site, either personal or for a small business, the range of necessary features is small enough that price and ease of use are the major driving factors that lead someone to choose a particular host. Shared Linux hosting with cPanel has been key in making excellent access and control available to even the most inexperienced of users.

Shared Hosting as the Main Option

Shared hosting is the only option that makes sense for most users who are beginning to build a site. Shared server hosting is basically an arrangement where a single physical computer will be programmed to handle the hosting of multiple sites. This approach is dramatically less expensive than the alternative of having a separate machine for each person who wants to run a site, because it means that hosting companies can meet the needs of a much larger number of customers with the same amount of space and a similar level of other resources. Since people running smaller sites that don’t have a lot in the way of specialized needs see little benefit from the advantages of dedicated hosting, shared options have largely taken over this segment of the market.

cPanel Makes it Easy

Once a host is being shared, though, a company needs to figure out how they can divide up the resources on the computer and give every individual control of their own account without being able to affect the others. This is where cPanel plays a central role. It is a piece of software that runs exceptionally well with Linux web hosting servers. cPanel takes all of the things those servers can do, and handles the work of dividing them among separate accounts and letting the owner of each account interact with his/her own site in a way that’s simple and intuitive. They get a dashboard that offers easy access to options like email, FTP, and databases, and from there they can do anything necessary to manage their site.

Ongoing Development

The options available in cPanel web hosting are only continuing to grow as new versions are released. It puts a strong emphasis on security options, such as being able to password protect directories where needed, as well as issue SSL certificates. It offers simple tools to make backups of the information in databases, email, and websites so that the job will get done rather than being put off.

There are also ongoing improvements to make it more attractive from the host’s side. For example, an early 2013 release improved the installation time of the product by 30 percent.

A Strong Position in the Market

For companies that are focused on hosting sites for small businesses and private individuals, Linux cPanel hosting has established itself as a very strong option. The Linux operating system is efficient, secure, and designed to work very well in multi-user environments. Running cPanel on top of it makes it possible for individual users to have easy access to all of their options and, at the same time, keeps them from doing anything that might interfere with other people who are sharing the same machine.

This combination of efficiency, security, and ease-of-use has led a lot of companies to rely on cPanel hosting as an interface for their customers. In turn, it is so widely used that it gets extensive testing and feedback that helps its developers to continue to make improvements and to build a progressively better product. Also, so many people are now used to the cPanel interface that they will deliberately seek it out, and it is extremely easy to find resources for users who need help understanding the available options.

I love cPanel, my favorite feature is its quick install of commonly used CMS softwares such as Joomla, Drupal and WordPress.

Having used my control panel several times, I am not surprised it is rising in popularity. I have used it to help create websites, forward my emails to other addresses, and help with managing my website. It is very easy to use, and navigate, which is why I think many people enjoy using it.

cPanel is good and its bad all at the same time. It is good because it provides a human-friendly way of administrating your hosting service. It is also bad because it makes it so easy. I for one like to learn about not using panels and doing everything the technical way. However, I still use a panel but its custom to my hosting service and I also use dedicated servers now.

If i am not wrong what CPanel really does is instead of typing bunch of commands in the shell CPanel makes it easier to run commands using a nicely formatted interface. The user doesn’t have to bother about the commands. Moreover all tools are integrated there including emails, crons, sub-domains, files, redirections etc!
We have been using CPanel for the last 7 years and it’s very easy to use and we didn’t find any other better tool than this. They have enhanced the features for the last couple of years and it really helped us well.
Thanks Clint for the nice post!

Easy to understand, Less expensive and enough tools for building an advanced website – this makes cPanel a first option for newbies and small business sites. The structured dashboard and well integrated tools give you a quick start.

I’m not surprised that cPanel is growing in popularity. This is the only control panel I’ve ever used on my sites. It’s the easiest I’ve seen, for one thing, and it’s nicely organized. Of course, I’m saying that as a not-very-techie person who uses shared hosting for my websites.

I recently signed up for shared hosting on HostGator an am still trying to wrap my head around using my cPanel effectively. It is not as easy as I thought it would be which is a pity because time is against me in getting my site up.
The features in the cPanel are interesting, I just wish I could grasp the whole thing much quicker ad get on with what I am doing. I am real novice so the learning curb is more challenging for me, but I want to be able to control my website more than I can with ready made designs such as offered by Simplesite offer.
    Nice post.

My first website was set up for me, so I didn’t have to create it myself but when it came to editing it, I was clueless on what to do. I had no idea how to use cpanel so I had to contact the site hosting company multiple times when I wanted to change my site to how I wanted it.
