April’s search engine market share results are in. For a 2nd month in a row, both Google and Yahoo! The only search engine to improve its performance in April 2009 was LIVE
Microsoft Live Gains Market Share For 2nd Consecutive Month in April 2009
Live Now Up Almost 1% since November 2008
After a relatively bad year in 2008 which saw a decrease of almost a full percentage point, it appears that Live is once again gaining some momentum. This month also saw the biggest improvement from month to month with growth of .40%.
Google Market Share Down .19% Since February 2009
While still an improvement of more than 3% since April 2008, this is the first time we have seen a 2 month drop for big G. We would expect this trend to correct itself as mobile browsing continues to grow. (something Google has already cornered the market in!)
Yahoo! Search Ship Continues to Sink
Think executives at Yahoo! are concerned about a 2.63% drop since April 2008? You would think that with the attention being placed on other web properties by Yahoo!, that search would begin improving at some point. This is not the case.
Market Share Summary
- #1 Google – 81.38% of market share in April 2009. Down from 81.39% in March 2009, and up from 77.23% in April 2008.
- #2 Yahoo! – 9.61% of market share in April 2009. Down from 9.93% in March 2009 and down from 12.24$ in April 2008.
- #3 Microsoft (MSN and Live combined) – 5.40% of market share in April 2009. Up from a combined 5% in March 2009 and down from 5.75% in April 2008.

Taken over a year over year basis Google is the only major search engine to post a higher growth rate; it has surged from 77.23% to 81.38%. All the others, have seen a minor slump in their growth with Yahoo slipping to 9.93% from 12. 24. Though Google may have suffered a slight drop they are very much the front runner and well entrenched. No immediate competition from any quarters for the present.
