Google Zeitgeist for 2008 has been released, outlining the most popular search terms from around the world in a variety of categories. It also includes geographic breakdowns, outlining the top search terms in Google from individual nations.
Here's a look at the fastest rising terms for 2008. And number one is hardly shocking.
Fastest Rising Search Items Around The World
1. sarah palin
2. beijing 2008
3. facebook login
4. tuenti
5. heath ledger
6. obama
7. nasza klasa
8. wer kennt wen
9. euro 2008
10. jonas brothers
The staff here at TechWyse will know of my personal glee at number 9, while I will probably do a facepalm at number 3. I mean really now! One, it's Facebook-the URL isn't that hard to remember. Two, Google doesn't know your log in. Trust me on that one.
I'm a little surprised that Obama only ranked at 6 globally (he was number 1 in the United States), given the immense popularity and interest in him during the year, but especially in the run-up to the election.
Check out the Zeitgeist results from a number of nations. I find both the similarities and differences in results extremely interesting.

The Google Zeitgeist again proves that Google out thinks the rest in making search useful to the world. Really there is a lot of information in there that allows even a layman user to perceive what is happening and to where the world is heading. Zeitgeist can be thought of as a true reflection of the “spirit of the times” we are living through. Glory to Google for this gracious gift!
The Zeitgeist results have been very interesting. Four in the top ten are social networking sites. Just goes to show how much clout they have over the society. And maybe there is also something to cheer for US Republicans in Sarah Palin’s consolation win over Obama. Republicans beat the Democrats in the search results at least!
Yes I have seen it with surprise. Never any surprises at the top? Based on top search words looks like users are using internet more as entertainment and socially connected engine than jobs, business, knowledge based engine!
Stats says 70% of searches are fame or celebrity orientated. Funny how Sarah Palin distracted the entire blogosphere from the rest of the results. Its difficult to swallow these search results. Serious and questous search gives way to trivial business. Like there were some interesting questions people asked Google, like “What is SMO?” or “What is RSS” – yet these things remained virtually unnoticed with everyone talking about Palin’s top position only.
Fascinated at the exemplary performances of tuenti, nasza klasa & wer kennt wen. Simple they have won the confidence of their people. And lots can be learnt from the successes of these non-English sites.
Interesting results! Youtube and facebook are almost every countries popular search word. What I think is funny is that ‘facebook login ‘ made the top 10
That ‘s funny. And says a lot about facebook. I mean it came in right behind the Olympics, interesting. More to fun – Palin comes first lol.

Three local networking portals, all the more non-English, which not too many people outside their countries heard off, and that became the most popular in the whole world. It seems that people from these concerned parts of the globe are using it vigorously irrespective of the local search facilities served by big search engines. It’s a great material to investigate on, and learn of their success. Was it an indication emergence of local SE ‘s over SE kings?
I can’t figure out for the life of me why Palin would be the top 1 search term. Its shame on serious internet users! Hmmm I think people are trying to tune in to see what crazy thing she is going to say or do next. At least we can content ourselves with the exemplary performances shown by non-English sites.
